This week marks Pod 25’s first as part of ISPN Media. We’re very excited to be aboard! For those of you just tuning in: on Pod 25 we talk about the blood and guts of the radio and television industries — who’s who, where are they going, format changes, programming decisions, censorship, and the reason your favorite station plays lousy music and has no DJs (it’s money, sorry to ruin the surprise). Chris manages to throw the sports in there, too.
Even if you’re not that interested in old-school media, the discussion is always entertaining. Don’t hold this episode against Chris, though — a nasty cold leaves him mouth-breathing and confused at times.
But this week’s episode is chock full o’ goodness nonetheless!
- Chris’ man-crush on Mute Math was publicized here.
- The Phillies lost, the Red Sox won, and we didn’t know it, but the D-backs won, too.
- We talk Rush Limbaugh, Media Matters, and Harry Reid. Just how important was it that Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays didn’t give in to Reid’s request that Limbaugh be punished?
- E. Gill just loves New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Quinn and co. are complaining that the PPM, which is soon-coming in NYC, will somehow cause radio to under-serve minorities.
- Nappy headed hoes, rejoice! Don Imus is going to be returning to the airwaves in New York, either on WABC or WPLJ. It looks like it’s just a matter of when and on which of those Citadel stations. If the I-man ends up on WABC, O&A fans will love the irony.
- Chris knows that he declared Free FM dead a couple of weeks ago, but he was wrong — it looks like one flew under the radar. What is believed to be the last standing Free FM, the former WKRK, has begun to simulcast its sister AM sports station, WXYT.
- HD Radio takes one step forward and one step back: Most of the big broadcasters announced that they will add iTunes tags to all songs played. E. Gill explains the technology, and notes that this would be great if it was readily available. At the same time, Citadel is ceasing nighttime operations on their AM outlets, something the FCC only recently gave the green light to, due to listener complaints.
- Odd imaging moves at WLTW in NYC.
- The Tube is a great music video network that most of you can find on one of your local digital subchannels. The problem is you can’t watch it anymore — they up and pulled the plug on October 1 with no warning.
- TBS is now cable only as Atlanta’s channel 17 changes calls from WTBS to WPCH-TV — Peachtree TV.
The Pod 25 theme music is “Never Get Out” by Brad Sucks.
